| Biography: | Penny Haussmann received her Master in Occupational Therapy (MOT) degree at Samuel Merritt College in 1996. Currently she is the owner of Therapy To Go and Tiny Talking Hands. Thru Therapy To Go Ms. Haussmann has worked with many children thru the public school system that have had struggle with handwriting as early as pre-k all the way thru the highschool years. The most profound observations she noted was how children truely never learned to print and transition into cursive so they are comfortable with both styles and have each style be legible. In search of a handwriting program that would bring the fun back into learning and leave the struggles behind she found Handwriting Without Tears. The program has proven to eliminate writing difficulties that were believed to be unbreakable habits. The results increased legibility, speed, and overall academic grades as their written answers were not graded as incorrect due to illegibility. Since the creation of Tiny Talking Hands, Ms. Haussmann had adapted the techniques of teaching hearing infants to sign prior to verbal language to the special needs children she serves in the school system. She has observed that along with the increased ability of the child to communicate their most simple needs, she is able to implement their OT treatment plans with greater functional outcomes. Colleagues, such as nurses, teachers, speech language pathologist’s and physical therapists’ have all inquired and implemented portion of these techniques as part of the team approach to implement the student’s individual educational plans (IEP). Henceforth, this course is designed to provide an adaptive approach to communication that is simple, cost effective, and easy for healthcare providers, early childhood educators, parent's and childcare providers to implement and assist in their treatment plan or curriculum.
